Sacred Music Concert and Dinner – May 21 and 22

requiem poster - final

The choirs of Trinitarian Congregational Church, Wayland and Westgate Church, Weston present a concert of sacred music on May 21 and 22nd, featuring two Requiems for choir and orchestra: Requiem in D Minor by G. Fauré (1893) and Requiem for the Living, by Dan Forrest (2013). Both works feature the 50 voice choir and chamber orchestra made up of students and adults from TCC and Westgate, plus Metro West community members. Dan Halberstadt and Adam Kurihara conduct.

The Requiem is traditionally a prayer for rest for the deceased – those we’ve loved and lost. French composer of sweet melodies and sublime harmony Gabriel Fauré breaks from the common compositional emphasis of pain and wrath and composes a joyful requiem full of hope. “This is how I view death”, Fauré remarked of his Requiem in 1902, “namely, as a joyous release, an anticipation of bliss beyond the grave, not as a painful experience.”

The second half of the program turns to a contemporary take on the requiem text. Dan Forrest (b. 1978) remarks that his work “forms a narrative just as much for the living, and their own struggle with pain and sorrow, as for the dead.” In this busy age it is exceedingly rare for a group of busy people to come together for no other reason than making beautiful music together. John Rutter, who compiled our 1893 version of Fauré’s Requiem, says that “You express, when you sing, your soul in song. When you get together with a group of other singers, it becomes more than the sum of its parts. All of those people are pouring out their hearts in perfect harmony; which is kind of an emblem of what we need in this world, when so much of the world is at odds with itself, that just to express, in symbolic terms, what its like when human beings are in harmony, that’s a lesson for our times and for all time. I profoundly believe that.”

We will also share in a family-style potluck meal. The cost is free, but please consider bringing a dish (soup, salad, side dish, or dessert) to offer a good meal for all who attend.  Childcare is not available but both churches have infant care rooms where families may use and watch the concert. Please invite friends as these will be special evenings of beautiful music, community fellowship, feasting, which is all worship. We hope you can join us for one (or both!) of these special concerts.
